Instructions
To search for petroleum substances, keep in mind the following:
- CAS Number requires the appropriate dashes (i.e., 1234-56-7).
- Text Search will find any word or word fragment you enter. It is not case-sensitive. The fields searched are the CAS Name, Short Name, and CAS Definition.
- EINECS Number requires the appropriate dashes (i.e., 123-456-7).
- Multiple filters can be applied to limit your search, i.e., Physical State and Refining Process can be combined to find only Gases within Catalytic Cracking.
The detailed results include information on:
- The Short Name for many petroleum substances was created by the API Health and Safety Regulations Committee in 1983. Not all petroleum substances in the database have Short Names.
- The Physical State and Refining Process entries are identical or follow the pattern in the 1983 API publication, "Petroleum Process Stream Terms, Included in the Chemical Substances Inventory Under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA)".
- The TSCA Inventory field indicates if the substance is on the USEPA TSCA Inventory of Chemicals.
- The TSCA Date field indicates if the substance was included in the 1983 API publication, "Petroleum Process Stream Terms" (In 1983 Addendum) or the date it was added to the TSCA Inventory after 1983. Blanks indicate that there are no data available on when the substance was added to the TSCA Inventory.
- 40 CFR710.46(b)(1) - This is a list of petroleum process streams that are exempted "partially" from Inventory Update Rule (IUR) reporting, i.e., exempt from reporting information on Part III of Form U.
- 40 CFR710.46(a)(4) - This is a list of certain forms of natural gas that are exempted fully from reporting under the Inventory Update Rule (IUR).
- HPV Category provides information on substances that may have been part of the USEPA's High Production Volume (HPV) Chemical Challenge Program. Not all substances in the database were part of the HPV Challenge and some individual substances in the HPV Challenge are not part of a category.
- EINECS Number is for substances found on the European Union's Chemical Inventory.
- EU Group is used to group petroleum substances within the European Union.
- REACH Registered indicates if the substance was submitted for registration to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
For a substance, to view any toxicology information that has been entered into this database, use the "Toxicology Data on This CAS Number" link under DETAILED CHEMICAL RESULTS. The four categories of information are:
- Physical-Chemical Data
- Environmental Fate Data
- Eco-Toxicity Data
- Mammalian Health Data
